The problem is, Apple chose it as the flagship format for its operating system images, and Windows doesn't play it as standard. On the other hand, DMG images use the standard Universal Disk Image, widely used, especially in hard disk partitions. Among its limitations, one can find, for example, that it does not allow writing, and that by using the DOS 8.3 standard, one can only create 8-level directory trees, nothing more. The ISO images use a file system ISO 9660, an optimized standard, especially for accessing files on slower disks. But if we analyze the two formats at a lower level, we can find several differences. That is, they are copies of the data on a CD or DVD so that we can mount it in a virtual drive (simulating that the disc is inserted into the PC) or save it, as is, to another drive. Therefore, if we have downloaded a DMG image (for example, the latest version of macOS) and want to use it on Windows, the best we can do is convert it to ISO format. In addition, virtually all programs are able to open and read this format, so we can access our files whenever and wherever we want. Windows 10 is able to directly mount and open these types of images as if they were physical CDs or DVDs inserted into a drive. The ISO format is the most used for working with disc images.
